Steinhatchee, Florida is in the state's Big Bend region, 70 miles west of Gainesville. It has a population of 514.

Steinhatchee is known as a rural fishing village on the Gulf of Mexico that Visit Florida calls “The Best-Kept Secret in Florida.”

Historically, when a post office was established it used the name “Dead Man’s Bay.” The Steinhatchee Vacations site says the "rumor is that 'Dead Man’s Bay” or Deadman’s Bay,' came from an incident when Native Americans found several men floating in the river around the 1500s.

Hurricane Idalia in 2023 also walloped Steinhatchee, making landfall close by where the 2024 Hurricane Debby landed, damaging the conclusion of the area's peak scallop season and all the revenue that comes with visitors. The city's next season, gag grouper, was also postponed as the small area recovered.

Also a major coincidence: The 2012 Tropical Storm Debby also made landfall in Steinhatchee.

Florida’s “Big Bend” is in the curve of Florida’s peninsula around the Gulf of Mexico and includes Jefferson, Taylor, Dixie and Levy counties.

The area "offers some of Florida’s best wilderness destinations. The Big Bend is a lush blend of salt marshes, tidal swamps, deep woodlands and an occasional slice of sandy beach," according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Big Bend area buffers the coastline from Florida's capital city, Tallahassee, which is a little more than 20 miles from the Gulf Coast.
