Lockdown at Virginia State University lifted after second shooting in less than a week

PETERSBURG, Va. — For the second time in less than a week, the Virginia State University campus was locked down after a shooting. The university lifted the lockdown early Friday after police responded to a shooting on campus just after 11 p.m. Thursday.

A man was found with a gunshot wound on campus and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Campus police placed the university on lockdown as they investigated the shooting in the 1 block of Hayden Street. However, police said this was an isolated incident and there was no active threat toward students. 

Virginia State University is about 24 miles south of Richmond, Va.

At 11:37 p.m. Thursday, Virginia State University Police tweeted to "Avoid area. Police on scene. Campus on lock down."

About three hours later, university police tweeted, "Police have cleared the scene. Officers will remain vigilant. Campus lock down has been lifted."

On Saturday, the campus was locked down after a man was found shot during homecoming festivities with non-life-threatening injuries. Chesterfield County (Va.) Police called it an "isolated incident."The lockdown was lifted early Sunday morning.

There was no word on whether or not a suspect was apprehended. 

There was no further information as of Friday morning.
