61-year-old woman critical after being struck by a car while crossing US 92 in Auburndale

A pedestrian incurred serious injuries Friday morning when struck by a vehicle while crossing U.S. 92 in Auburndale, the Auburndale Police Department reported.
The crash occurred at about 7:25 a.m. on U.S. 92, near Second Street, APD said in a news release. A 61-year-old woman entered the median of U.S. 92 while walking south across the road from Second Street.
As the woman reached the median, a vehicle attempting to travel west on U.S. 92 from Old Winter Haven Road also entered the median and struck her, the release said.
The pedestrian was taken by medical personnel to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center and was in critical condition Friday afternoon, the release said. APD was trying to locate notify family members.
The driver remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with traffic investigators, the release said. APD did not identify the driver or victim.

It was the third accident involving pedestrians in Polk County in three days; the other two accidents were fatal. Late Wednesday night, two people were killed while crossing South Florida Avenue in Lakeland. And early Thursday morning, a man was killed by a box truck while walking in predawn hours along Combee Road near Main Street in unincorporated Lakeland.
